How We Rate Casinos
Our assessment methodology assigns each operator a score from 1 to 10 based on eight weighted categories. We prioritize licensing and regulation above all else, followed by game quality, bonus fairness, banking efficiency, support quality, mobile adaptability, responsible gaming safeguards, and overall scale interpretation. Every criterion is checked against current market standards in Canada for 2026.
1. Licensing & Regulation (MGA, UKGC, Curaçao, local CA license)
We first verify that the casino holds at least one valid license from a recognized authority. Acceptable bodies include the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC), Curaçao eGaming, and any provincial Canadian regulator (e.g., Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, Kahnawake Gaming Commission). A license must be active, displayed clearly on the site, and traceable to a legitimate operator. We examine any past disciplinary actions or unresolved complaints. This category carries the greatest weight because it determines legal operation and player protection.
2. Game Selection & Software Providers (slots, live casino, table games)
We evaluate the breadth and depth of the gaming library. A strong casino offers hundreds of slot titles from reputable studios such as NetEnt, Microgaming, Play'n GO, and Pragmatic Play, alongside a substantial selection of live dealer games from providers like Evolution and Ezugi. Classic table games (blackjack, roulette, baccarat, poker variants) must be available in multiple versions. We also assess whether games are independently tested for fairness and RNG certification by labs such as eCOGRA or iTech Labs.
3. Bonus Terms & Wagering Requirements (T&Cs, rollover, max cashout)
Before recommending any bonus, we read every term and condition line by line. We focus on the rollover requirement attached to deposit matches, free spins, and no-deposit offers. A fair rollover is typically 30x–40x the bonus amount; anything above 50x lowers the score. We flag maximum cashout limits that cap winnings too harshly, game contribution percentages that exclude most slots from clearing wagering, and short validity periods. Hidden clauses, such as voiding winnings after a certain bet size, result in a significant penalty.
4. Payment Methods & Withdrawal Speed (crypto, e-wallets, bank transfers)
We check the full banking suite available to Canadian players. Preferred options include cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin), e-wallets (Interac, MuchBetter, Skrill, Neteller), bank transfers, and credit/debit cards. We measure typical withdrawal processing times: crypto and e-wallets should clear within 24–48 hours, while bank transfers may take 3–5 business days. We look for low or zero fees, reasonable minimum and maximum limits, and a straightforward verification process. Any operator that delays payouts without clear reason receives a lower score.
5. Customer Support (24/7 live chat, email, responsiveness)
We test all support channels without identifying ourselves as evaluators. A quality casino offers 24/7 live chat with an average response time under 60 seconds. Email queries should receive a substantial answer within 12–24 hours. Telephone support is a plus but not mandatory. We also inspect the FAQ section for completeness and whether it covers common Canadian payment and verification questions. Responsiveness, accuracy, and politeness of agents all factor into this category.
6. Mobile Experience (responsive design, dedicated apps)
We load the casino on multiple devices and screen sizes, including iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. A responsive website that adapts seamlessly without horizontal scrolling earns a baseline score. Dedicated apps from the App Store or Google Play improve the rating if they maintain full game availability, fast loading times, and stable performance. We also check that live dealer games and cashier functions work correctly on mobile. Any missing features compared to desktop versions reduce the score.
7. Responsible Gaming Tools (deposit limits, self-exclusion, cooling-off)
We require every casino to offer practical tools for player protection. At minimum, players must be able to set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits directly from their account. Loss limits, wager limits, and session time reminders are valued. A self-exclusion option that immediately blocks access for a chosen period (6 months, 1 year, permanent) is essential. Cooling-off periods of 24 hours to 6 weeks allow temporary breaks. We also look for links to external help organizations such as ConnexOntario or Gambling Therapy and age verification checks. Casinos without these features fail this category.
8. Our Rating Scale (explain the 1-10 score)
Every casino receives a final score from 1 to 10, with one decimal place allowed. The score is calculated by weighting each of the seven previous categories according to their importance: Licensing & Regulation (25%), Game Selection (20%), Bonus Terms (15%), Payment Methods (15%), Customer Support (10%), Mobile Experience (10%), and Responsible Gaming Tools (5%). We use the following bands for interpretation:
- 9.0–10.0: Outstanding across almost all categories. Fully licensed, fair bonuses, fast payouts, exceptional support, and strong responsible gaming tools. Recommended without hesitation.
- 7.0–8.9: Very good with minor shortcomings. Could have slightly higher wagering or slower email support, but overall safe and enjoyable.
